Instead of choosing one candidate, you can rank your choices for the candidates you feel will best represent our community.
You can rank up to six choices to use the full power of your vote, but it’s OK to rank fewer. Only rank candidates you support and would feel comfortable electing.
You’ll still receive your ballot by mail and can return it by mail or in a drop box. But now, Portland voters will have more ways to show which candidates we support to represent our community.

For the first time, Portland will have districts with 3 City Councilors elected per district. The Mayor and Auditor will still be elected citywide.
You can rank up to six candidates, we recommend ranking at least three to fully express your preferences.

When you can rank your choices, you can choose your true favorite candidate without worrying that your vote may be wasted if they don’t win.
Your rankings for 2nd choice, 3rd choice, etc., can still have an impact.
Ranked-choice voting also means that every candidate needs to earn support from as many voters as possible. Even if they aren’t your first choice, they want to be one of your backup choices. This gives candidates a reason to listen to all voters, not just the ones that already support them.

Only fill in 1 bubble per candidate. A candidate can receive only 1 ranking, so only the top vote will count.
If you rank your favorite candidate as your 1ˢᵗ and 2ⁿᵈ choices, only the first rank will count and your 3rd choice will be counted as your 2nd choice.

If you skip any ranking, the next candidate in order will be raised to the highest open position.
If you rank only your 1st and 6th choices, the candidate marked as 6th will be counted as your 2nd choice.

Only choose one candidate per rank. Duplicate ranks are not counted.
If you mark 2 candidates as your 1st choice, both will be discarded and your next-highest choice will be counted as your 1st choice.

Only rank candidates you want to win, even if they’re not your top choice.
If you rank a candidate you oppose, that vote would count in their favor if your higher-ranked choices are eliminated.
